Well, I have heard that riding a bike to work helps keep you energized but this is really taking it a bit too far.

I was torn about posting this one because the bloke is obviously very seriously injured, but I suspect this was an accident waiting to happen and I suspect he'd tried this trick before without any catastrophe and thought he could keep getting away with it.

Indeed, there's not really much of a funny side here. From the perspective of a former 999 call handler for the ambulance service, all I can think of is:

  • Thrown from bicycle onto hard surface = likely head trauma and spinal injuries.

  • Landed on live rail = severe electrical burns.

  • Definite scene safety concerns.

  • Easy to find location, so ambulance should get there pretty fast

In conclusion, complacency can be very bad for your health.

That's something we very rarely get a sense of in these stories. All we ever hear of is the front-end - the accident, the injuries, the fatalities. I can't ever remember the media breaking down an incident like that.
