Those of you with long memories and high boredom thresholds may remember that before Christmas I mentioned the story of John Darwin, who walked into a London police station claiming to have lost his memory, having spent the previous five years dead.
Mr Darwin went for a bit of a canoe out into the North Sea in 2002 and only the wreckage of his kayak came back; eventually he was pronounced dead, and his wife claimed the life insurance.
Was it a scam? Oh yes. Today Mrs Darwin was found guilty of fraud and jailed for six and a half years. Mr Darwin, who had already admitted deception, was jailed for six years and three months. The Guardian seems to have a fairly extensive report.

It's a shame people actually have to be dead to evoke the phrase 'Darwin Award', or it would be so appropriate here.

You know, that never occurred to me, but you're right.
