Attentive villagers will have noticed that I have mentioned our Prime Minister a number of times over the past couple of years, but it occurs to me that those of you on the other side of the village pond may not know quite who I'm talking about. I mean, President Obama is probably the most recognisable man in the world, but which of you could pick Gordon out of a police lineup?
So this is Gordon recently announcing the measures to revamp the rules on MP's expenses. There are two remarkable things about this clip on YouTube. Firstly, it was actually released on YouTube by Number Ten. And secondly, I have no idea what Gordon's image consultants have been telling him, but watch out around 1.35.

Yes, but have you ever seen him do anything like that? It's as if someone has said to him, `Smile now and again,' but hasn't bothered to tell him when.

It's a dream, isn't it? You witness a bank robbery and go to a lineup, and there's Gordon. What do you do?

Dammit, we still haven't figured out what's wrong with you and embeds yet, have we? I forgot. My apologies.
Okay, the linky is here.
Let me think some more about your embed problems, although as usual I can't promise anything.

Aah, he's got quite a nice smile -- in a weird, cartoony kinda way. He just needs to work on his timing of it.

That's it, isn't it? The timing's all wrong. It's as if there are notes on the autocue that say `smile now' and they're in the wrong place. Its hard to believe that New Labour, who were once so sure-footed with the media, are now floundering like this. I mean, releasing a statement like this online. What's going through their minds?
I'm told, just between you and me, that in private Gordon is just like the rest of us - calm, mildly amusing, mildly funny, perfectly amiable. He just can't do this stuff in public, and when people try and coach him it just makes things worse.

I actually think the 'fine in private, awkward in public' thing shows in little clips we see of Gordon 'off stage' and I warm to him because of it. If politics comes down to personalities, I'll take Brown over Blair any day. Blair looked and spoke like an evolved weasel. He was about as trustworthy as one, too.

I think his days are numbered. I heard a story about the Gurkha vote - Labour whips were apparently standing outside the lobbies and pointing out to Labour MPs which one they should go through - ie the one which would have swung the vote for the Government - and MPs were just ignoring them and walking past to the other lobby.
MPs have learned that it's not only possible to disobey Gordon, it's possible to do so an be considered heroes. That has to be narcotic.
It's just my opinion, but I think we're watching the endgame of a great political tragedy being played out. Gordon worked all his political life to bring Labour back into government, and then he waited a decade to take power, and apart from his one shining moment at the G20 it's been a catastrophe.
