Just to prove - as if proof were needed - that even in the worst situations we're never more than a hair's breadth from complete absurdity, the British Army has been accused of unleashing a plague of ferocious badgers in Basra.
What I like most about this story - and there's a lot to like about it - is the quote from Major Mike Shearer, who goes down in British military history as the only officer ever to say, "We can categorically state that we have not released any man-eating badgers into the area."

If the Americans had been accused of that, the spokesperson would have said something more like, "Badgers?! Badgers?! We don't need no stinkin' badgers."

Too arcane once again,

I had a little bet with myself over how long it would take someone to come up with that line, and you snuck under the wire by about 24 hours.
Actually, `Weird' Al Jankovic did it first in VHF back in...oh, ever such a long time ago. Good film. Very funny. Not words you often hear associated with `Weird' Al Jankovic. Or is that Weird `Al' Jankovic? Weird Al `Jankovic'? Sorry, it's been a long day. ;-)

UHF -- The sad thing for that film was that it came out the same summer as the last Indian Jones film, Batman, Dead Poets' Society, When Harry Met Sally and several other biggies. It didn't stand a chance.

My children has acted out that movie, line by line, lyric by lyric since the youngest was 3.

We've been to Al Yankovic concerts and have every CD and video.

Mind you, we've had to explain what an Ultra High Frequency television station was to them. It's particularly meaningless now.

Yes, of course. UHF. I might have known you and your family would be into `Weird Al.' My favourite bit in the film is where the kid drinks from the firehose. That made me laugh until I almost needed the Last Rites.

On a sobering note, I guess it shows how bad things are over there if people are blaming the British for releasing man-eating monsters into the community.
On the other hand, I keep thinking of Major Shearer's statement and I just keep breaking into a grin. I suspect Joseph Heller would have loved this.
