You underestimate the ingenuity and sheer animal cunning of a dog at your peril. "He liked to sit on it and sunbathe," indeed. That's the dog version of Steve McQueen throwing his baseball near the wire in The Great Escape while he scoped out the blind-spots of the guard towers.
Mind you, I hope Harvey comes home safe.

Aw. Sad.

Dogs are smart escape artists. I hope Harvey finds his way home too.

We have three escape artists in our home -- one cat and two dogs. The other cat finds life at home very safe and had no interest in leaving. It is a trial dealing with the other three -- always on the lookout!

I live in mortal terror of the cats getting out - they've been brought up as house cats and have no idea how to behave in the wild.

Oh, Same here, Hutch! In fact, about a month ago, both cats got out accidentally. Alice, the ginger cat, had escaped before, though only a few feet from the door. However, Phoebe had NEVER EVER been outside, and she was totally freaked, just frozen in fear. And so was I!

Both Dougal and Kasia have expressed an interest in the outside world, but only a mild curiosity. Kuron is such a beast of luxury that he knows better than to even try. We actually have harnesses and leads for the boys, and we took them out for a walk in the garden a couple of years ago, and all they wanted to do was come home again.

We tried a harness and lead on Alice, the one who desperately wants to be out, even though she never has been an outsider... it was a bust. She kept backing up and trying to get it off. She never even noticed she was outside.

Yeah, you really have to persevere and let the cat get used to it before you take it outside. It was rather comical, watching Dougal walking backwards to try and get out of it.

I bet! It is also hard to find small enough harnesses here. I think that is a good idea.. we didn't think of that. Put the harness on in the house for awhile. Duh. Sometimes we are just so DUMB.

I think, so a fairly small cat, it might be difficult to find the right harness here as well, although they are adjustable. Fortunately, Dougal's a bit of a bruiser. I don't think all cats take to them, but, again fortunately, Dougal's pretty chilled.

We're going to try to find a harness for her and try it again... wish us luck!

We can all relax. Harvey is safe! Although apparently he's been showing unusual interest in the family's motorcycle...
