His name will mean nothing to those of you on the other side of the village pond, and it probably won't mean much to the younger villagers over here, but Charles Wheeler was an absolutely outstanding journalist and broadcaster, a proper old-fashioned boots-on-the-ground reporter. In a world which has in it such enormously well-remunerated broadcasters as Rush Limbaugh, Wheeler was the real thing. Calm, humble, totally professional, the servant of the story rather than the subject of it as so many broadcast (and print) journalists seem to think they have to be these days. A proper journalist who did his very best work - and there was much of it - on the road rather than in the studio. A giant has passed, and it only compounds my sadness that so many these days don't follow his example.

I too was very much saddened when I read of Wheeler's death, and my thoughts were very much like your own. It somehow seems to symbolize the passing of a journalistic age -- an age of greatness.

I agree with you about an age of greatness passing. It's not just the stories he covered, but the way he covered them, and in a way he invented the role of the BBC television foreign correspondent. Martin Bell, himself a foreign correspondent of some distinction, offers an appreciation. While I knew Wheeler was Boris Johnson's father-in-law, I hadn't made the connection between him and Shirin Wheeler, who has for some time now been doing excellent reporting from the European Parliament.

Many thanks for that link.

(Being BoJo's father-in-law tarnishes Wheeler's image a bit, though ...)

On the other hand, it buffs BoJo's up a bit. Wheeler was no fool, and I doubt he raised his daughters to be fools either.
