...because being the subject of a fatwa isn't in the least bit funny, but one of the Special Branch detectives who guarded Salman Rushdie has just written his biography, which paints a less-than-flattering portrait of the great man and doesn't do Special Branch all that many favours, by the sound of it. In my own exceedingly fleeting experience of Rushdie he seemed an extraordinarily nice man and not in the slightest arrogant or rude.

He probably got a bit fed up with being confined a small house with boorish, drunken Special Branch officers . . .

I've never had the pleasure, and am never likely to, but what struck me most about this story was the sheer Englishness of it. They locked him in a cupboard under the stairs while they went to the pub. Can you imagine the Secret Service doing that to someone?

Nah. They'd just shoot him. Freedom, democracy, liberty -- that sort of thing.
