We are indeed talking about the old Colney Hatch Asylum. The area around it used to be called Colney Hatch, but the locals were so annoyed that they were constantly associated with the asylum that they renamed where they lived `New Southgate.' Back in the day, it was a separate village, but nowadays it's really just the eastern end of Friern Barnet.
The hospital has actually featured in a couple of films I know of. Some of the exteriors for Lindsey Anderson's Britannia Hospital were filmed there, long before it closed, which must have been a diverting experience for the patients. And after it closed there's been quite a lot of filming there, but the only film I know about for certain is a schlocky horror flick called Beyond Bedlam.
Friern Barnet's a bit run-down these days, compared with what it was like when I moved up here about twenty years ago. But everywhere's a bit run down these days, compared to what it was like twenty years ago. Myself included.
There are bits of North London which are really not terribly pleasant, and bits which aren't too bad. Sometimes separated by only a few streets. It's like everywhere, I guess. `North London' is also kind of a subjective thing; I've heard the term applied to King's Cross, which as far as I'm concerned is in Central London. I guess if you were splitting hairs you could say we were really on the borders with London and Hertfordshire (or London and Middlesex if you wanted to be really picky) but I just tell everyone we're in North London and let them make up their own minds.

This is very interesting to me, learning about the Grand Island from one of her natives. It's one thing to read books and articles about England, and another hearing about her from someone who lives there.

So, tell me Hutch, how well traveled are you around the UK? And would you mind very much my picking your brain for info about the land, from time to time? The UK is at the top of my list for visiting, someday, should I ever get over my fear of flying . . .

. . . even if you guys are pinko leftists! ;D

Well, I've got about a bit, over the years, although I've only ever been to Wales once and I've never been to Cornwall. Pick away. If I don't actually know anything about a place, I often have an opinion. And when I don't have an opinion, I can usually scare up a couple of unreasoning prejudices.
You would be most welcome to stay with us, should you ever conquer your fear of flying.
And compared to you guys, even the most rabid Conservatives are pinko leftists... ;-)

If you and Bogna ever want to visit Vegas, you're welcome to stay under my roof. My home is small and humble, but also warm and welcoming. (Although I can't for the life of me figure out why anyone in his or her right mind would ever want to visit this god forsaken blasted heath!)
