This story kind of started strong today on the BBC and Sky and then rather surprisingly tailed off, but the Government has sold its shares in the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston to an American company. I'll grant you, the AWE was mostly American-run already, but actually selling it - to a California-based firm - seems a step too far. Now our independent nuclear deterrent is not actually in our own hands any more.
But the importance of this sale lies in what it signposts - there are suggestions of a `fire sale' of government assets to fund the unimaginable amounts of money the government has used to bail out the banks. The Indy gives us a useful list of other family silver the government is considering selling off, including the Ordnance Survey, the Met Office, the Covent Garden Authority and the Tote. I can't see any of these being regarded as quite as valuable as the AWE, to be honest.

What was late?

My main response is YOU FUCKERS
Stop it right now. The Ordnance survey is valuable, because once you ahve it you have everyone over a barrel regarding good quality maps. Thats why its a fucking public organisation, you bastards. In order to run a "free market" mixed economy, certain goods have to be provided at low cost by a public body, in order to ensure that private companies can all access the goods equably and prevent growth of monopolies.
Hence the fucking met office is a fucking public body, you rapacious bunch of braindead pus filled zombies with the intelligence of a dead rat, and morals to match.
ARGH.
I now regard the present administration as terrorists operating in order to destroy the last vestiges of the apre war settlement and thus take us back into the dark ages.
Dammit, I'm annoyed.

It was late when I wrote the post - Thog pulled me up for misspelling `deterrent.' He does that kind of thing.
I entirely agree with you. And what I find alarming is the way it seems to have dropped out of the news.

Oh yes, and regarding the nuclear "I've got nukes so don't get out of line even though I'm not allowed to use them because really I might just use them even although I'm not going to use them" deterrent, I'd be happier if there were none anywhere, but given we have some, they should be under gvt control. Now, the gvt isn't going to have any fewer accidents than a private company, (although since the military industrial complex is so powerful, you might as well call them the same thing) it is more that the gvt will at least attempt to put the country and the strategic needs first, whereas a private company will put its shareholders first.
cf the last 8 years for several trillion dollars worth of examples and therefore the flaws involved.
Bastards.

You'll find no argument about that here. There are some things which really shouldn't be privately owned. What happens if this company goes bust? Does the AWE get put on the open market? Will there be a bankruptcy sale?
