I just heard that the Elastic Press, a small but perfectly-formed British publishing house who produced gorgeous-looking books full of extremely wonderful fiction, is no more. I don't know the circumstances, but I have a suspicion they won't be the last. Bollocks.

"I don't know the circumstances"

I'll forward Andrew's newsletter to you. It's not as grim as you think!

(Grim that Elastic's shutting down, of course. But the reason's not grim.)

Ah. Thanks for that. It's becoming something of a knee-jerk reaction over here: you hear of someone closing down and you just assume it's because of the credit crunch. Still a shame, though.

Dang. not the best time to be a first time writer trying to get published. *sigh*

I don't think there's ever been a great time to be a first-time writer, but I believe things are going to get tougher this year.
Having said that, Thog put me straight about Elastic's demise, and it has nothing to do with the credit crunch, or indeed financial matters in general, and more to do with the publisher wanting to get his life back and spend some time with his family, for which of course no one can blame him. It's a shame, though. He did great work; if you ever get a chance to pick up one of Elastic's books, please do so; they're excellent.
