The people who are allegedly in charge of putting on the Olympics in London in 2012 have just released the official logo, which I offer for your edification:

Seb Coe, the chairman of the organising committee, said, "This is the vision at the very heart of our brand," while our Prime Minister, from wherever the hell he is at the moment, said, "When people see the new brand, we want them to be inspired to make a positive change in their life. London 2012 will be a great sporting summer but will also allow Britain to showcase itself to the world."
Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee, joined in this bandwagon of lost minds by saying,  "This is a truly innovative brand logo that graphically captures the essence of the London 2012 Olympic Games - namely to inspire young people around the world through sport and the Olympic values."
Oh, I have such a bad feeling about these Games...

This pile of crap cost £400,000 of public money! What a waste. It looks like some graffiti from the side of a tube train.

Was it four hundred grand? I knew it would turn out to be a ridiculous amount of money but I couldn't bear to check. And as someone who lives in London, no doubt a proportion of my Council Tax has gone towards paying for it.

Actually, I'm not sure what disturbs me more, the logo itself, the amount of money it cost, or the bizzare worship of it by Seb Coe et al. And how did I miss the moment when the Olympics became a `brand'?

Umm, are you sure that's the logo? I thought it was a broken jigsaw puzzle. *user shakes head, thinks better of it and shakes puzzle box* Hmm, still looks the same.
Hugs,
Jean Marie

And now we learn that an advert using animated footage promoting the Games may cause seizures. Extraordinary.

At first glance, I thought it was an advert for a construction project for the London Zoo ... ooo.

Dear Davey Six-toes, I hereby extend to you and your beloved our guestroom for the duration of the actual event. Just run away.

Bless you, but I want to be here to watch the madness. It wouldn't be the same watching it on CNN or BBC World from the comfort of a recliner in your front room. Although...

You who go mad daily with your commute?! You say you want to watch the madness, but you're already starting to whine about 5 years beforehand. Pullleez.

Besides, we'd be watching it from the hot tub.

Well, you'd have to be made of stone not to whine about commuting. And I started whining about the 2012 Olympics shortly after we won the bid.
My theory is that the morning after Sydney won their bid, they woke up and thought, "Jesus, what have we done? We're really going to have to raise our game here and work hard." And they put on one of the best Games ever seen.
When our guys won the bid, I suspect they woke up the next morning thinking, "Quite right, too, we absolutely deserve it because we're brilliant." Which fills me with dread.
Well, that and the fact that the rhetoric surrounding it reminds me very strongly of the rhetoric that surrounded the Millennium Dome. And we still haven't quite lived that down.
And as for watching it from the hot tub, that's just...wrong...
