it seems i owe gordon an apology

I've made much fun of Gordon's alleged `smiles' which appear out of nowhere and often with no attention to appropriateness. But it seems I've been too hard on him. I've just finished Born Yesterday, Gordon Burn's final book, in which he presents the `news as a novel' about the year 2007.
Burn speaks of Gordon Brown's awful smile, and tells the story of how, when he was at school, a bang on the head while playing rugby detached his retinas and he very nearly went entirely blind. This story I knew, but what I didn't know was that one of the four operations he had to save at least some of his sight did something to the muscles of his face and left smiling actually painful for him.
So, I apologise for making fun, Gordon.
