sad kitteh

jeremy beadle

This will mean little or nothing to those of you on the other side of the village pond, but British writer and radio and television presenter Jeremy Beadle has died this evening at the age of 59. I'd heard he was ill again, but I hadn't realised it was so serious.
When I was somewhat younger than I am now, Beadle was something of a pop-culture icon. He could be extremely entertaining and he could be infuriatingly smug and irritating, but I'm rather sad he's gone.

in which hutch puts his hands up and admits he was wrong. again

A little while ago, either some way back here, or at someone else's place, I assumed my role as infallible political pundit and cautioned not to rule out Rudy Giuliani because he was waiting for the Florida primary and then Super Tuesday to show his hand. Rudy has foiled me by having a totally crap primary season and then quitting. It's a good job I'm not a political journalist.

On a more serious note, from this considerable distance it seems to me that this is the most ill-tempered Presidential race (and I'm treating the primaries as part of the Presidential election, the Monkey King being unable to run again) in some considerable time. And that's within the two parties. God only knows what's going to happen when they've chosen their candidates and the two of them go toe-to-toe.

pitching for joe

I was going to put this in the previous post, but their site went down and has only just come up again. In today's Independent Richard Schiff writes an entertaining and - I think - informative article about his time stumping for Joe Biden. I think this is a very nice piece. I liked Schiff's work in The West Wing very much, and now I like his writing too.
