drinking in the last chance tube train

One of the first acts of our new Mayor was to announce a ban on drinking on public transport, along the same lines as the smoking ban which came in following the King's Cross fire. Personally, I'm rather in favour of this, even though I've never actually seen anyone drinking on public transport. My feeling is that it's easy to announce a populist policy, but rather more difficult to enforce, and we'll see how it pans out.
Anyway. It's a quarter to one in the morning on June 1, and the new law has been in force for three-quarters of an hour. Earlier this evening there were Underground drink parties to celebrate the last day you could drink on the Tube. Most of these seem to have been on the Circle Line, logically so because the Circle Line just goes round and round Central London. Get on any other line and you'd find yourself in Ruislip or Mordern or Heathrow or Cockfosters, facing a long ride home. At one point they managed to close Liverpool Street station.

max is doomed

I fear Max Mosley's days as head of the FIA are numbered, after Bernie Ecclestone, who basically owns Formula One, came out and said he should step down. Earlier this week it was announced that Max was suing the News Of The World over the `Nazi orgy' story. Bernie seemed to be sitting on the fence a bit over the whole issue - it must have been difficult for him, being a friend of Max's for forty-odd years - and while he did Max could hang on. But now his position seems impossible.

it's...

It's been a little while since we got the bunting out and tapped a keg or two and did the Infernal Dance Of Hello (known only to some of the Elder Gods) but I'd like to welcome davidjwilliams, whose debut novel Mirrored Heavens is just out. Welcome, Dave, and if the reception the last couple of villagers got is anything to go by, may God have mercy on your eternal soul.
