I'm broadly in support of the aims of the American screenwriters who are now on strike. But there is a god...!

I saw this Beeb news item earlier, just before going off and having the best, most relaxed afternoon nap in a very long time. Coincidence? I think not.

I'd had hopes for the movie of The Da Vinci Code. Not very high hopes, because the book was so astonishingly execrable, but hopes nonetheless. As it was, the movie managed to be such that neither Pam nor I succeeded in our separate attempts to watch it all the way through, this despite the fact that it featured Jean Reno and Audrey Tautou, not to mention Ian McKellen -- three of our all-time fave actors.

Now imagine the same movie without any of these three . . . No wonder I slept so well on hearing the news of Angels & Demons's postponement. With any luck . . .

I had the same hopes because, no matter how crappy the novel was, very many of the people involved with the film are enormously talented. And some of it was filmed across the road from our office. But no. The longer the world's without another film like that, the happier I'll be.

"And some of it was filmed across the road from our office."

Would that have been down at St Bride's?

Temple Church. There's a shot of them running away from Temple Church and if they'd held the shot a fraction of a second longer you'd have seen the front of our office. It was the only part of the film I enjoyed.

Not, though, as startling as the opening to Children Of Men, which was also filmed just down the road, just between the old Telegraph building and The Black Lubyanka.

"I am, sadly, one of the readers who enjoyed The Da Vinci Code hugely"

Said in the tones of someone at an AA meeting ...

That one with the strange plot against NASA or for NASA or something hacked me off. Apart from at least 2 scientific errors the characters were 2 dimensional and annoying, kind of like Clive Cusslers later books. I can accept some hand waving and dodgy stuff just to let the story flow ok, but I'm afraid the actual errors annoyed me.

I would like to know if geeks had sent him hordes of letters. Possibly real geeks wouldn't have read his book in the first place.

I should confess here that I never read The Da Vinci Code. I did try to read Angels And Demons and couldn't get more than fifty or sixty pages in. I just found it very badly written. Imagine my writerly envy when The Da Vinci Code came out and D*n B***n became enormously wealthy. God I hate it when bad writers make money.

Did you ever read my parody of it, Da Easter Bunny Code? I got four chapters into it then had a whole stack of publishers tell me it was hysterically funny but they didn't think they could sell another Da Vinci Code parody because all the others had been dire and had turned readers off. As at that stage I hadn't known there were any others . . .

So I stuck the four chapters up on my The Third Alternative discussion board, where it remained until Andy abolished individual authors' TTA boards. I might put the chapters up on LJ if I get the urge -- I've been sort of vaguely thinking of doing so.

I never saw that. I'd like to read it, if you ever post it on LJ. I could do with a laugh right now, to be honest.

Sorry to hear that. I hope there's nothing too much amiss.

Would you like me to email you your very own copy of Da EBC?

Nothing too much amiss, really. Just the usual commute-work-sleep-commute stuff. Yes, I would like to see Da EBC.

Phew!

Smooch Bogna to cheer yourself up, mate.

"Yes, I would like to see Da EBC."

I'm trying to get something finished tonight, and will likely be too tired to think of this by the time I'm done. Could you nag me tomorrow, please, if I haven't yet sent it?

I loved Da EBC. The weird thing is, I imagined Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou and Jean Reno in it.

Alas, I can't smooch Bogna right now. She has tonsilitis and smooching is forbidden.

"I loved Da EBC."

Then tell all your friends! Especially the friends who're editors with fat chequebooks!

"Alas, I can't smooch Bogna right now. She has tonsilitis and smooching is forbidden."

Well, do give her lots of sympathy and tell her I would find a way ...

All the editors I know are as poor as church mice.

And yes, I know you would find a way, and that's why you scare me sometimes... ;-)
