This is Raz, a baby Aye Aye who has just been born at Bristol Zoo.

The Aye Aye is, of course, the presiding spirit of the villages, and they're outlandishly endangered. I read somewhere there may be only about a thousand of them left in the wild, mostly in Madagascar.
Welcome, Raz. It's a tough old world.

I hadn't heard of the Aye Aye specifically until earlier today in a chance phone call with one of my cousins (a long, dull story in itself). One of her sons-in-law is on his way to Madagascar to study them for some post-doc work.

The stewardship of the planet is such an overwhelming task. One project at a time does its part to a greater or lesser effect. Sometimes such efforts work; sometimes they don't. We saw the last two of a subspecies of rhino at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in November. Heartbreaking.

Thanks for the sweet picture and the edification.

Actually, I hadn't heard of them until about fifteen months ago; there was another one born in a zoo over here and its picture was all over the papers and I fell in love with them. I've no idea why they're called Aye Ayes.
You're right about the stewardship of the planet. Sometimes I think we're losing.
