well poke me in the eye with a sharpened stick...

A while ago both realthog and frostokovich posted some thought-provoking stuff about eugenics in 20th Century America, and jaw-dropping stuff it was too.
This is really only connected to that conversation in spirit, as it doesn't directly involve eugenics, but I still read it open-mouthed. I had known a little of the history of lobotomy, but I'd never heard the story of Walter Freeman before, and it rendered me speechless.
