This will mean little or nothing to those of you on the other side of the village pond, but British writer and radio and television presenter Jeremy Beadle has died this evening at the age of 59. I'd heard he was ill again, but I hadn't realised it was so serious.
When I was somewhat younger than I am now, Beadle was something of a pop-culture icon. He could be extremely entertaining and he could be infuriatingly smug and irritating, but I'm rather sad he's gone.

Good grief, he was so young. Dang. That just isn't right.

As I - and quite a lot of other people in the media - pointed out last week, he could be enormously irritating. But I found him enormously entertaining as well. He worked tremendously hard, and - I hadn't realised until the obits started to come in - he raised a huge amount of money for children with leukaemia. Some papers say it was as much as £100 million, which, irritating or not, is a considerable achievement.
And yeah, 59's no age at all, these days.
Good to have you back, by the way.
