Once again, meaningless to most of you, but Miles Kington, journalist, writer, columnist and broadcaster, died today at the age of 66. I sort of missed Kington's early career, but his columns in The Independent over the past few years have been a source of great joy to me.

You know, I hadn't thought about the Goodies. I suppose I think of them as forever young. And of course there's Humphrey Lyttleton, who just goes on and on. Barry Humphries. The remaining Pythons. There are very few people of that calibre coming up to take their place. Stephen Fry, John Sessions maybe, Jeremy Hardy. And of course we lost the greatest of the younger generation, Linda Smith.
I read Kington when I could, when I remembered, and it was always a joy. As you say, I found him quiet, unassuming, a devastatingly good writer.

I really am sorry about Snufkin. I know it's no consolation, but you and PK gave him the best life anyone could and the best departing from it, surrounded by love.

But Kington, Coren and Sheridan Morley were in kind of a different category, I'd say. They were really the last of Punch magazine; I think it's the case that George Melly could also be added to the list. That whole particular subset of British humour seems now gone.

God, I'd forgotten about Melly. Isn't that awful? I guess we'd have to include Ned Sherrin here, as well. All of them bloody good journalists as well as great humourists, Coren particularly. Yeah, I think you're right, the curtain is coming down on an era of British humour.

A race of giants is passing, right before our eyes.

A new Olympics event, is it?

I'm almost tempted, you know? `And here comes Barnes, followed by McEwen, followed by Priest, followed at some distance by Amis...'
