There's nothing funny about this. Really, there isn't.

But is it something you choose to do at school, or is it something you just drift into?

Wow, those whacky Finns. You see Finnish Formula One drivers interviewed and they're among the most uninteresting men on the planet; who'd have thought that beneath those calm, dull surfaces lurk untapped wells of pure weirdness?

I'm told, quite reliably, that all of Ikea's furniture is actually made in Poland.
Mind you, Poland and Sweden do have a history...

I wouldn't worry. It's an area of European history everybody knows little or nothing about. Mind you, the Poles still haven't forgotten.

One of the things that makes me love the Poles and despair of them all at the same time is they have a huge capacity for magnificence and a huge capacity for catastrophe, often all at once. A friend of ours who once tried to teach me Polish told me that the Poles can do something extraordinary on Tuesday, and have it entirely karked up by lunchtime on Wednesday. There's a Polish saying that goes something like `Polska nie zandem stoj,' which means roughly, `Poland stands on disorder.'
They were, once upon a time, one of the most powerful nations in Europe. Which I guess is part of the reason Frederick the Great and Catherine the Great went to so much trouble to erase the country.
I love them very much.

My own spoken Polish is poor and my written Polish nonexistent. But fortunately, I do happen to know a native speaker. Maybe email me on the LJ thing and let me know what you need and we'll see what we can do.

Many thanks for this! I knew about the case, of course (there's been plenty on BBC World Service about it), but I hadn't heard about this latest development. As I'm almost certainly going to put an "End of the World is Nigh" chapter into Bogus Science, chronicling some of the failed doomsday predictions, this extract is jolly useful. Again, thanks.

You'll notice down in the comments section of the Times piece that someone points out, quite rightly, that we're still only at the beginning of April, so technically he's not wrong yet...

Good point. I'll make sure not to write about this until May or June, so as not to risk wasting effort on it.

Yeah I noticed that, too.

And you know, bashing one's head with a log against a stump is a sure way to improve one's cognitive abilities as well as prophetic, no doubt.

"tried to kill himself by banging his head with a log"

Now there is a real wise move.

Yes. It's kind of the immovable object meeting the irresistible force, isn't it?

I liked that line: `His condition is described as stable.' That can't happen to him too often.

oh dear. I was drinking some coffee with cream (yum... no comments about tea being better...) and nearly spewed it all over my keyboard and monitor.

ya know, i think you might be absolutely right on that one.
