I'm getting used to seeing stories like this, but I still have a hard time getting my head around the science involved. Anyway, astronomers have identified yet another planetary system orbiting another star. This one's just five light years away, which in cosmic terms is pretty much right next door. I love this stuff.

I was a bit suspicious about a star so close as five ly distant (meaning it has to be one of our half dozen or so closest neighbours) being called just "OGLE-2006-BLG-109L", and googled it.

Sure enough, the Beeb missed out the vital word "thousand": OGLE-2006-BLG-109L is some 4900 light years away.

Dammit. I didn't think of that.
Yes, the good Ogleoids are a lot further away than I thought.

I checked the article and it now says "five thousand." ummm, big difference that!

The BBC article says 5,000 light years.

The science is pretty simple, as long as you keep it to words, just don't ask me about the maths, I've never been very good at maths.

The article said five when I posted. Someone at the Beeb must have realised their mistake and put it right. Either that or they're watching the villages and saw Thog correct me. Which is an interesting thought.
I sort of have a basic grasp of how they're doing this, but it still sounds a bit like divination to me; we still haven't seen these planets, just observed how they affect things around them.
