A few days ago Gordon Brown did quite a chunky interview with the BBC's political editor, the mighty Nick Robinson. Robinson asked him how he felt about the thousands of families who, through no fault of their own, have suddenly found themselves facing financial hardship due to the current banking crisis.
Blair, for all his faults, would have dealt with a question like this faultlessly. He would have emoted about feeling their pain. He would have wrung his hands a bit. Then he would have told us that, y'know, times are hard but his team were working to make things better and if we all pulled together we might get through all this.
The first words out of Gordon's mouth were, "Well, I'm always vigilent..." and that we were in a much better position to weather the storm than other nations and it's containable anyway. Not what Robinson asked.
Gordon's reply did not go unremarked. And the remarks have not gone unremarked, because today he came out with a completely unreal stream of nonsense, no doubt at the behest of his media handlers.
He says he wakes up in the morning thinking what he can do to help homeowners and small businessmen and so forth. Yeah, right, Gordon. And I wake up in the morning full of the joys of Spring and suffused with boundless optimism about the day.
He also says the economy is his "sole focus," which is mildly alarming considering he has other stuff to do as well now he's Prime Minister.

The Poznan stuff is almost finished. Tomorrow night should see it done, then it's the Estonian stuff (which I'll need to do some research on) and that ties up Part One. I think I'm on-line to top out around 100K on the first draft, but I could be out by as much as fifty thousand words, and of course it'll get longer once I start to fiddle with it.
