things you can do with the internet (part 2)

Years and years ago, back in the 1980s when we were all a lot more innocent (except Thog, who has never been innocent) there was a terrific television film called Max Headroom. I can't really describe it to you. If you saw it, you'll know why, if you didn't you'll have to look it up. In the US, I understand, it spawned a series. Over here, it spawned (if memory serves) a two-season-long series of music video shows hosted by Max himself. Allegedly the first computer-generated television host (but actually played - and played very well - with the help of prosthetics and video graphics, by the actor Matt Frewer) Max introduced videos by the likes of Cabaret Voltaire, Belouis Some, Ultravox (not the classic lineup, the one after Midge Ure joined) and many more. I still have those shows on tape, somewhere. Actually, I know exactly where they are - they're still in a friend's shed, along with an insane amount of other stuff they let us put there when we started having the flat remodelled.
But never mind. There was one song and video Max Headroom played that I was very taken with, and it was `Gonna Get Close To You' by Lisa Dal Bello. The video...maybe not so much - this was the 80s, after all, and rock videos were pretty embarrassing - but there were a couple of moments I thought were rather startling.
I don't know what got me thinking about the song again tonight; I searched for Lisa Dal Bello years ago and got no hits at all, but I tried her again on Google tonight, and what do you know, there it is, song and video. Now? Well, the song is 80s weird rock, the video is just weird and rather laughable, but there's still a moment that sends a shiver up my spine. And Lisa herself is very easy on the eye. I love the internet.

The sharp-eyed among you will have noticed that I haven't been posting word-counts for a couple of days. Partly this is because I've been out in the evenings, and partly it's because I've been researching Estonia for the next bit of the book I have to tackle, and I've discovered (because there was no Google Earth when I originally wrote these bits) that I got a big chunk of description all wrong. I also didn't look closely enough at one particular address, which is not where I thought it was. Basically, I was sloppy first time round. So I've been trying to fix that, rather than actually writing. Normal service should be restored later this week.
