Yep, that's the kind of day that a nice cuppa just quails in the face of, isn't it? There are some days that a cup of tea is just too polite a response to. Days you want to shake your fist at and say, "Damn you, day, you haven't beaten me because I have in my other hand a cup containing enough hot caffeine to make the Statue of Liberty dance a pavane."
Days when I usually go, "Ah, bugger it," and give up.

Oh, those days I am familiar with. And they're happening more and more often. Usually I skip the coffee and just go with the Scotch.
Years ago I picked up a tip from Alfred Bester (not personally, you understand, from something he wrote) about naming characters. He just grabbed names from the environment. I can't remember whether it's Tiger, Tiger or The Demolished Man, but one of those books has a lot of English names - including a character called Yeovil - because Bester happened to be in England at the time and grabbed names out of the phone book and the atlas. It's a useful exercise. Pick up the phone book, look at some maps, see if there's a combination your hero likes. If nothing else, the exercise will take your mind off things and something might suggest itself out of your subconscious. Or just name him after me and I'll send you a cheque. I always wanted to be a fictional hero.
