Subject: drinking in the last chance tube train
Security: Public
Location:the utility room in the sky
Music:blackmore's night
One of the first acts of our new Mayor was to announce a ban on drinking on public transport, along the same lines as the smoking ban which came in following the King's Cross fire. Personally, I'm rather in favour of this, even though I've never actually seen anyone drinking on public transport. My feeling is that it's easy to announce a populist policy, but rather more difficult to enforce, and we'll see how it pans out.
Anyway. It's a quarter to one in the morning on June 1, and the new law has been in force for three-quarters of an hour. Earlier this evening there were Underground drink parties to celebrate the last day you could drink on the Tube. Most of these seem to have been on the Circle Line, logically so because the Circle Line just goes round and round Central London. Get on any other line and you'd find yourself in Ruislip or Mordern or Heathrow or Cockfosters, facing a long ride home. At one point they managed to close Liverpool Street station.
